The city of Donetsk, which was originally founded in 1872 under the name Yuzovka and was called Stalino between 1917 and 1961, gained importance through steel production for the Russian railway. Later, it became the most important mining centre in the Ukraine. Approximately 1,200,000 people currently live in Donetsk. The city has its own airport and can be reached daily from different european cities by international airlines.
